JU Anqi: Grass Style
ARARIO GALLERY Shanghai is pleased to present JU Anqi's solo exhibition, Grass Style, on view from March 18 to April 28, 2023. As JU’s first solo exhibition at the new space of ARARIO GALLERY Shanghai since his solo exhibition in Seoul in 2018, it features JU Anqi's most representative series of monochrome paintings, Grass Style.
As one of the leading representatives of Chinese monochrome painting, JU Anqi strips away the "grass" from the traditional literati painting, which is visually abstract but is in its essence, oriental minimalism, distilling a solitary and abstract state of mind with a powerful sense of texture. The exhibition is curated by Li Zhenhua, and supported by Yoon Jin Sup as the academic advisor.
The series of Grass Style presents a striking visual intensity with its iconic sharp-edged lines and smooth, delicate strokes, creating a dynamic sense of shape and color composition. By continuing the relationship between the traditional and the future, blurring the boundary between the figurative and the abstract, the sharp and upright lines simultaneously evoke the sense of solitude and vulnerability prevailing in the era of the contemporary, which its sharpness embodies the infinite power of silence and avoidance of the world.
In addition, the exhibition features his latest video work, 24 hours in Shanghai, which sheds light on the beginning of JU Anqi's new video series 24 hours and subversive breakthroughs in his creative language of film.
