[News] The Stories of Taiwanese Indigenous People and U.S. Military Comfort Women... Experiencing 'Others' Worlds' Through VR

KWON Hayoun has long utilized virtual reality (VR) as a medium to recreate forgotten historical memories and inaccessible spaces. In the Artist of the Year 2024 exhibition, her first VR work, 489 Years (2016), will also be showcased. This piece is based on the testimony of a soldier who once served in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the heavily fortified border between North and South Korea.

KWON explained, "I needed a medium that could provide spatial reflection to convey the vivid emotions I felt when hearing the story and to depict a place I’ve never been. VR allowed me to clearly express the subjective viewpoint of the witness."

Through VR, viewers experience the tension of life-and-death situations symbolized by "landmines," alongside the stunning natural beauty of the DMZ, represented by "flowers." For this exhibition, however, the work will be presented in a video format rather than VR.
