HWANG was working as a photofinisher at a lab in Hollywood in the 1960s when he burned film by candle flame. Asked why, "Boredom," he answers. As he watched the cellulose film curl, sizzle, and char, he wondered, "how would this look enlarged?" He found out in the Burnography series.
