The brilliance of the champagne-colored metallic sculpture instantly captures the eye. Upon closer inspection, 185 brass rods, each slightly offset and featuring one end shaped like a club, are meticulously inserted into a long steel beam. Suspended in mid-air by thin wires hanging from the ceiling, this massive object weighs 500 kilograms.
This is Horizontal Garden (2018), a signature piece by sculptor KIM Byoungho (b.1974), who has garnered attention for his aesthetically refined sculptures and installations crafted primarily from accessible metals such as aluminum and brass. The work is being presented in KIM's solo exhibition Lost in Garden at ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL (December 26, 2024 – February 8, 2025). Previously showcased at ARARIO GALLERY SHANGHAI and K11 Art Museum in Shenyang, China, the piece is being unveiled in Korea for the first time through this exhibition. Suspended delicately from thin wires, the artwork floats in the air, casting vibrant shadows on the floor below.
