The JoongAng: Lost in Garden

Moon Soyoung, The JoongAng, 4 January 2025

The word "garden" evokes a sense of longing for nature, but all of KIM Byoungho's sculptural works are created through a process where he designs precise blueprints, commissions factories to produce standardized modules according to these plans, and then assembles them. Both the process and the outcome seem to embody the machine aesthetics of the industrial age. Despite this, the artist explained his frequent use of the title "garden" as follows:

"A garden is nature that has been touched by humans. Even in the old days, the courtyard of a country house was decorated and arranged with plants and trees intentionally planted by the owner. Nowadays, in cities, gardens are a mandatory feature when constructing buildings or large complexes, creating even more dramatic effects. It’s not the raw, untouched nature outside the city, but nature that is artificially and intentionally created within the city. I believe the word 'garden' represents this."
