HWANG Gyutae: PIXEL

HWANG’s pixel series is characterized by its departure from traditional photographic methods. Unlike conventional photography, which involves capturing subjects with a camera and rendering the images onto a photosensitive surface, his approach consists of selecting and magnifying pre-existing images to uncover and document the various shapes and colors of their pixels. He visualizes these in multiple ways, shifting the focus from the traditional photographic concept of ‘indexicality’ to the notions of ‘selection’ and ‘magnification’.
