ART BASEL HONG KONG 2022

CHOI Byungso’s “Untitled”, which was exhibited at Arario Museum Topdong Cinema in 2016, will be on view. Being part of the artist’s most representative series, the presented work is made from newspapers that have been ruthlessly crumpled and torn along the grain. As the forerunner of Korean experimental art, CHOI participated in Korea’s first contemporary art festival, “Daegu Contemporary Art Festival” in 1974 and inaugurated the experimental art association “35/128” with various leading figures from the event. Driven by his critical consciousness towards reality, the artist selected the most common and inexpensive materials to create his works. The erased surface of newspapers, symbolic of repression, demonstrates his resistance against society.
